Weekend Highlight: Dragons Storm the Charles!

This weekend, Boston will offer one of my absolute favorite local warm-weather events.
Dragons will be taking over the Charles on Sunday, June 8, when the annual Boston Dragon Boat Festival kicks off bright and early at 9am. The free family-friendly event will last all the way until 5pm, providing revelers with arts, crafts, and always essential food, in addition to the traditional exhilarating racing that makes the day such a memorable good time.
As is customary, individual items on the schedule will unfold on both banks of the river, with the Boston side featuring an eye-dotting ceremony, a dragon dance, and a dragon dance parade from noon until 12:30pm.
Most of the attractions will take place in the Big Performance Tent on the Cambridge side of the river, however. There, attendees can view the opening ceremony, as well as a number of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Polynesian presentations incorporating dance and music.
Especially interesting to children is the concurrent Arts and Crafts Tent that will also be open from noon until 5pm. So, when they get tired of watching the dazzling boats go by on the Charles during the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Races Finals from 9am to 5pm, they’ll have somewhere relaxing to retreat to where they can learn about different cultures while discovering their own artistic talents.
Visit the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival of Boston website for additional details about the popular event, including caterers, directions, performers, racing teams, scheduling, sponsors, and available crafts.
