Weekend Highlight: Big Apple Circus

There’s a lot from my childhood I don’t recall, but three things I do remember quite clearly: going to the beach the first time, going to Coney Island the first time, and going to the circus the first time. I always grow a little happier whenever the circus comes to town because I hope the children who get to see it will remember their first time forever, too.
My earliest circus experience was with Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus at Madison Square Garden — not bad at all. This weekend, however, scores of kids (and adults) from the Boston area will have the opportunity to take in New York’s Big Apple Circus when it opens its 30th anniversary season at City Hall Plaza (Boston City Hall, One City Hall Plaza, Boston) on Saturday, March 29.
What I really love about the location is its proximity to the Government Center stop on the Green Line T. The circus tent is merely steps away from the train station’s entrance; you simply can’t beat the ease of transportation.
The Big Apple Circus’ Sunday show at 12:30pm is already sold out, but three weekend dates remain available: 12:30pm and 4:30pm on Saturday and 4:30pm on Sunday. Tickets range from $15 to $100, with children under 3 admitted free as long as they sit on a paying adult’s lap.
Lucky people can also score half-price same-day tickets at BosTix Booth locations in Copley Square (between Boston Public Library, the John Hancock Tower, and Trinity Church) and Faneuil Hall Marketplace (West End entrance of Quincy Market). And, since the Big Apple Circus is in town until Sunday, May 4, if you can’t get in or get over right away, plenty of chances remain to attend a show on the schedule, which lists performances twice a day, five or six days each week.
Attendees accompanying small and/or restless children should keep in mind that shows last about two hours and fifteen minutes, with intermission included. Therefore, plan ahead and perhaps bring small, quiet distractions, such as a puzzle or picture book, to keep bored children preoccupied. [More Information]
