Billed as “a look into John’s life through his artwork,” the event will feature the largest collection of Lennon’s art on paper from the years 1968 to 1980, including limited-edition prints and song lyrics, that express Lennon’s stance on peace, hope, and love.

The traveling exhibition has helped contribute thousands of dollars to charities worldwide throughout its fifteen-year existence in the United States, and this weekend’s showings will continue that history. As a result, attendees will be asked to donate $2.00 at the door to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Boston, always a worthy cause.

Started in 1969 by a compassionate Catholic priest named Patrick Hughes, the Walk for Hunger is a 20-mile pledge walk, the oldest one in the country, through Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Newton, and Watertown. The purpose of the trek is to raise money to fight hunger among Bay State residents.

Although it’s hard to believe that starvation could possibly be a constant worry for inhabitants of the United States — that only happens in faraway, third-world countries, right? — a recent Boston Globe article by columnist James Carroll sets the record straight.

Government studies suggested in 2007 that nearly half a million residents of [Massachusetts] do not have enough to eat. In a place where the income gap between the richest and the poorest is vast, the high cost of living puts the supply of basic nutritional needs beyond the reach of many. If a silent tsunami has struck the globe, a quiet Katrina rolls in on Massachusetts families every day. In many households, three meals have become two.

The first Walk for Hunger in 1969 had about 2,000 participants who raised $26,000 together for local food programs. Last year, 43,000 participants in the 39th annual Walk for Hunger raised a record-breaking $3.4 million as a result of donations from every state in this country and twenty additional countries around the world.

Clearly, those who are concerned about the shocking disparity between the quality of life for people who have enough to eat and those who don’t can do something about it. Two options are to donate to Project Bread’s worthy cause or join other Walk for Hunger participants on Boston Common this Sunday, May 4, between 7am and 9am to go on one of the best walks of your life. The popular actor has a lot going on these days besides his hit NBC series The Office, most notably entertainment-wise the upcoming feature film Leatherheads. It premieres in theaters nationwide next Friday, April 4.

Despite the odd title, the 1920s-era romantic comedy has a top-notch cast that includes Academy Award winners George Clooney and Renée Zellweger. Talk about a local boy making good! Krasinski is keeping some mighty fine company these days on both the small and big screens.

Since the actor is from around these parts, I’ve included clips of his most recent late-night talk show appearance after the jump. He comes across like a person who deserves every bit of the success he’s now enjoying, which should make fans even prouder of his considerable accomplishments.

Incidentally, Krasinski is also on the cover of the April 2008 edition of Boston Magazine, on newsstands now, if you just can’t get enough of him. Cute photo!

Several activities are in the works for this week. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, interested individuals can visit MEDA’s offices (92 Pearl Street, Newton, 617-558-1881) to contribute a patch to the Quilt of Hope. The coverlet represents a communal effort to create an inspiring item with a unique background, and the finished product will remain on display at MEDA and be shown during certain future functions.

In addition, Thursday will feature a talk at Simmons College (300 The Fenway, Boston, 617-521-2000) with Aimee Liu. The author has published various fiction novels, as well as several nonfiction books about her personal battles with distorted body image and eating disorders, specifically anorexia, including Gaining: The Truth About Life After Eating Disorders and Solitaire.
