January means it’s Super Hunger Month in Massachusetts, and accordingly, today’s hockey game between the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs was a hallmark of sorts. For the first time ever, the local team held a 5 For Fighting Hunger Can & Cash Drive aimed at helping the non-profit Greater Boston Food Bank abolish hunger among needy people.
Attendees had the opportunity to donate either five non-perishable food items or $5 to the organization up to two hours before the start of the 7pm game. They were then entered into a giveaway featuring autographed Bruins merchandise as prizes.

There must be something in the air. Or, maybe it’s just that perfect record the New England Patriots established to much fanfare last Saturday night. In any case, today brings word of yet another worthy sports-related charity event besides the Hot Stove, Cool Music affair I mentioned earlier.
This Sunday, January 6, the non-profit Boston Bruins Foundation will present the 18th Annual Wives’ Charity Carnival, with proceeds helping to sustain the commendable charity Cradles to Crayons. Tomorrow is Christmas Day, and one thing that makes the current holiday season in Boston complete each year is the massive effort put forth by Globe Santa to ensure that December 25 is special for as many young people as possible.
