Things to Do in Boston on St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
According to local newspaper the Boston Herald, yesterday’s 107th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in South Boston attracted an estimated and stunning one million revelers. That’s a whole lot of people out celebrating, which goes to show how ingrained all things Irish are in the city.
If you missed the festivities on Sunday or just want to continue honoring the holiday and Irish heritage today, here are a few suggestions to help you pick what works best for you.
Finding Your Roots: Irish-American Catholic Genealogy
Thomas Crane Public Library
Tracing your Irish ancestry is complicated by the fact that public records were destroyed in Dublin in June 1922. Under the leadership of professional genealogist Michael Brophy, this seminar will provide genealogical tips on how to go about digging into your roots in Ireland, despite that very major setback.

Bee Irish
The Beehive
Join the fun-loving folks at the happening nightspot The Beehive for the first annual Bee Irish event. Surprisingly, there’s no cover charge for the fine assortment of cuisine and music inspired by Ireland. You do have to pay for the chow, though, which is only fair.

St. Patrick’s Day with Joshua Tree
Boston Billiard Club
What’s the next best thing to an actual band? A cover band, of course. Since U2 won’t be in town today, head over to Boston Billiard Club for a pretty good alternative — local U2 tribute band Joshua Tree. Tickets are $10 and attendees are advised to arrive early for a better chance of admission.

U23D
New England Aquarium
Still rather have the real thing? I repeat: U2 is not in town today. But, if you must see Bono and the boys in as close to the flesh as possible, the best and easiest way to do so is at the New England Aquarium’s stunning IMAX Theatre. For just about $13, you can hear all the classics and more during a special presentation of the IMAX 3D concert film U23D.

A Very Metal St. Patrick’s Day Party
Church of Boston
Fenway’s Church of Boston has exactly what you need if you like your music loud. This 21+ event costs $10 at the door and will feature sets by four Elephantine Records bands: A Cold Reality, The Forlorn Hope, Graveyard BBQ, and Southern Bastard Church.

St. Patrick’s Day Free Bowling
The Milky Way Lounge & Lanes
For those who prefer their holidays a little more active, the Milky Way Lounge & Lanes will combine a free night of bowling and pool with reggae and ska-style music mixed right on the premises by DJ Generoso of Bovine Ska Radio. It’s definitely a different take on St. Patrick’s Day celebrating, and attendees must be 21 or older.
