Attend Mini-Med School at Harvard

Attend Mini-Med School at Harvard

And, no, I’m not making that up. There actually is such a thing as “mini-med school,” at least if you believe the brilliant scientific minds at Harvard Medical School in Boston (and who, pray tell, wouldn’t?).
Amazingly, the seminars offered at mini-med school are available to the general public … free of charge. That’s right — for free! At Harvard! If you’re not familiar with how much money just one Ivy League course costs, please take my word that this “price” is a ming-boggling bargain.
Even better than that is the fact that not a single examination is …read more

Christopher Walken’s Hasty Pudding Honor Revisited

Christopher Walken’s Hasty Pudding Honor Revisited

On Friday, February 15, I wrote about Academy Award-winning actor Christopher Walken’s trip to Cambridge to receive his Hasty Pudding Theatrical honor as 2008 Man of the Year. Lucky me, I recently found more in-depth footage of the event in addition to the short video I included with the original article.
If you’re a true Walken lover or just really, really keen to see what a 64-year-old man looks like as he dances while wearing a wig and a bra, check out the extended report that local journalist Joyce Kulhawik presented at exactly 11:10pm on the WBZ-CBS4 newscast that day. …read more

The Boston Red Sox Go to D.C.

The Boston Red Sox Go to D.C.

…and all the President got was a huge crowd, lots of good-natured laughter, and a supercool custom team jersey with his name and a number on it.
Earlier today, the Boston Red Sox made their second trip to the George Bush-helmed White House as World Series champs. The first time they visited the United States’ seat of power was after their 2004 victory.
According to an absolutely effusive Boston Globe report (no one will ever be able to claim Bay Staters don’t love their sports teams) everyone within miles was overjoyed to have the baseball players in town. The anticipation …read more

Happening hot spot The Beehive (541 Tremont Street, Boston, 617-423-0069) is already getting its own first annual celebration together for the big day next month and wants you to come join in the feast-themed Bee Irish festivities.

Jam at the World’s First OurStage College Clash

Jam at the World’s First OurStage College Clash

Whoever said the best things in life aren’t free (or something like that) never heard of the people responsible for OurStage.com and its upcoming OurStage College Clash competition. Heck, until recently, neither had I. But, now that I am aware of the ambitious venture and its creators, I won’t forget them anytime soon — their website is already bookmarked in my browser of choice, and I’m a full-fledged, registered, and active member as of today.
So, what is OurStage? To put it simply, a venue for artists to have their work judged by the people who matter most, …read more

These Shoes Are Made for Watching

These Shoes Are Made for Watching

Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts (Avenue of the Arts, 465 Huntington Avenue, Boston, 617-267-9300) definitely knew what it was doing when it decided to host the Walk This Way exhibit — there are few things that many women (and I’m guessing some men) love more than shoes. So, why settle for a stodgy museum that only displays assorted paintings on the wall and the usual archaeological objects on pedestals when you can ogle more styles of shoes than you ever imagined possible?
The Walk This Way exhibit, running through March 23, is a collection of footwear that spans the ages …read more

Eating Disorder Awareness Week Is Here

Eating Disorder Awareness Week Is Here

A very important issue is about to take center stage in Boston, courtesy of Newton’s non-profit Multiservice Eating Disorders Association (MEDA), which is hosting Eating Disorder Awareness Week. The letters in the acronym MEDA alternatively stand for Mentor, Empower, Develop, and Assist. Accordingly, the group is committed to educating the public to raise awareness of the issues and symptoms that define eating disorders in order to help prevent them from spreading.
Several activities are in the works for this week. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, interested individuals can visit MEDA’s offices (92 Pearl Street, Newton, 617-558-1881) to contribute …read more

Dive into the 3D Waters

Dive into the 3D Waters

Like fish, and not just or necessarily to eat? Two popular Boston destinations are currently screening films capable of giving viewers an extra-special underwater nature experience.
And, these aren’t the run-of-the-mill, humdrum movies already available at the local theater either. The New England Aquarium and Museum of Science are going grand instead, serving up deep-sea footage in larger-than-life 3D style.
Deep Sea 3D
New England Aquarium
The New England Aquarium (Central Wharf, Boston, 617-973-5200) bills its Deep Sea 3D film as an “underwater adventure” and correctly so. Presented with breathtaking IMAX 3D technology, the shots beneath the ocean’s surface give viewers …read more

Sophie Freud Speaks on Her Famous Family

Sophie Freud Speaks on Her Famous Family

Here’s an event that’s worth attending, even if you’re not really into books or libraries — the “fascinating” factor alone is a sufficient draw. Tonight at 7:30pm EST, Sophie Freud, the granddaughter of renowned and still influential Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund Freud, will make an appearance at Waltham Public Library (735 Main Street, Waltham, 781-314-3425).
Last year, Praeger Publishers released Sophie Freud’s captivating memoir Living in the Shadow of the Freud Family. The autobiographical book recounts her life during the previous century, when she lived in Europe and the United States with her mother Esti, who was married to Sigmund …read more

More No Pants for Boston

More No Pants for Boston

If you recall, back on January 12th, intrepid commuters in Boston took to the subways and dropped their pants, all for the sake of the city’s first ever No Pants! Subway Ride. The historic stunt had been out of the news for a while, but it resurfaced this past Sunday when Boston Globe writer Charles Pierce gave it the humor treatment.
In the Globe Magazine piece titled “No Pants? No Problem,” the writer makes a persuasive argument for more depantsing in the public sphere. Why relegate the daring disrobing act to just one day per year when you can …read more
